Farming for the future
Intensive animal agriculture is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, and all too often, a disaster for biodiversity. Finding farming solutions that can use land more effectively is one of the biggest challenges we face in overcoming the global climate crisis. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the Himalayas, where the amount of arable land available was minimal to start with.
With this in mind, the Nimsdai Foundation is supporting the development of farming methods and tools that will reduce land requirements, while maintaining or increasing nutritional yields.
Through grants and direct or indirect financial support, the Foundation is promoting both high-tech and low-tech solutions to the issue, fully conscious that a lack of power, connectivity and technical know-how may prevent Nepalese mountain communities from adopting the latest technology immediately.
The Nimsdai Foundation's objective is to ensure that farming, while continuing to provide sustenance and livelihoods for mountain populations, doesn’t encroach on the pristine natural environment any more than necessary. If possible, the Foundation will seek to ‘rewild’ arable land, returning it to nature in such a way that both the local ecosystem and the local community’s benefit.
